You are correct about our soils being formed by the glacier, but it's not the reason why they are so productive - we can thank the tallgrass prairie for that.

The prairie didn't have earthworms but it did have different species of ants (along with other types of macro and microfauna), which accomplished much the same as earthworms do today.
