I'd agree that it must have been the two-stroke chain drives.

I have a 98 325 magnum shaft drive that get's the hell beat out of it. We use it to scout crops, spot spray, chase cows, etc. My two boys, I'm sure, do things with it I don't want to know about. "How did the back rack get a crack in the side??" Response - "I dunno, must have just happened." Yeah, right, I was a kid once too, things just don't happen on their own....

Other than oil changes, greasing and a new battery, it's still running strong.

Like someone said, most of the complaints come from those who don't maintain machinery like they should. When this one quits, I'd buy another in a hearbeat.
