Ahh...confirmation that they do, in fact, get beaten up badly.

Also, I'm still trying to wrap my head around the idea that this does anything. The balls, if they were able to, would just get stuck wherever they were on the tire when the tire speed got fast enough to keep the balls in place via centripetal force.

If you were able to do a random test, you'd probably find they tended toward the farthest point from the center, but not (anywhere close to) consistently enough to overcome the fact that they have dimples on them that would counter their want to move once they settled in at cruise speed. They could even make the problem worse, I'd think.
