I don't think there is a shield of any kind that I can remember without running out and looking. Check the wires where they run along the block back to the cab and the connector that plugs into the regulator. It may be dirty and offering a higher resistance then normal and causing it to go out? I have had problems with NAPA replacements in the past. We have a shop here that rebuilds them and I have have very good luck with them. 9 times out of 10 its the bearings that go out first.
