Subject: Re: round flat bottom liquid tanks

It must be something being pushed by the feds. I was at a pesticide training session here in Indiana this winter & they talked quite a bit about the different types of tanks and what they were designed for. The guy from the state chemist's office stated that the round, flat bottom tanks were for storage & not transportation. He didn't mention anything about baffles but did say that the rfb tanks didnot have the extra support built into the sidewalls of the tanks like the eliptical tanks designed for transporting had in thier endwalls but rather their strength was in the bottom of the tank. Another issue were that they didn't have appropriate tie downs, even saying he went so far as to call a tank company & asked about what the tie downs at the top of the tank were for. Tank co. said those tiedowns were for securing empty tanks to the dealer/customer & were not designed to hold a loaded tank.

Another thing he stressed were the tank ratings. According to him their are three ratings for tanks : 1, 1.5, & 1.9. Tanks rated at 1 are designed to hold water . A tank rated at 1.5 is designed to hold liquids 1.5 x the weight of water & a 1.9 tank is rated for 1.9 x the weight of water. He recomended using at least a 1.5 tank for hauling mixed chemicals. He also stated that the rating is on paperwork when shipped from the factory but not stamped into the tank.
