I am betting his happened right next to a busy road so all the neighbors can see your screw-up. This stuff never happens on the "back 40."
I planted 30 acres of corn once at half the desired rate once when I was a kid and the old man make me do it again at half rate and stay on the row, as that was back in the cultivate corn days.
