Subject: RE: NH3 and planting?

Central Illinois
From the Pioneer "Walking Your Fields" newsletter: "Apply anhydrous ammonia at least 2 weeks ahead of planting to avoid any potential for injury to germinating seeds or seedlings. If conditions are very dry or very wet at anhydruos ammonia application time, there is increased potential for ammonia burn on the roots. To minimize the risk, apply at angles to the row and at least 6-8 inches deep. It is better to skip the anhydrous application and plan on sidedressing than it is to delay planting."

FS agronomist recommended waiting a week before planting but said he had seen root burn and plant death even with application at an angle.
