There are a number of ways to handle this. Many times we would let the pump (on the planter) draw from the front tank on the tractor. Should have a decent quality pump for that. We usually set them up with a break at the hitch, so tractor could get away from planter, if needed, or desired. Biggest problem with drawing from the tractor tank/tanks is that you don't dare to have a loose connection or you will suck air and then you don't get fertilizer. You must have tight connections.
On the other hand, if you have a small pump pushing back to the planter, the connections are not as critical, and the pump won't have to work as hard. Some guys set them (the pusher pumps) up so that they could turn them on when the planter started to get low, and that usually worked well.
