Cambridge, southwestern Nebraska | Quite literally...as fast as the ground allows. I cut 10-20 bushel wheat a couple of years ago at 9 mph and it was still stripping the heads just fine. Normally I run around 6 or so, again depending on how smooth the ground is. Header drive belt slipping is the first indication of getting maxed out. The other is the shoe loss monitor. Never had to watch it much in wheat before but you can actually overload the shoe in good wheat. (Running a Gleaner R62.) Power is no longer a limiting factor.
Although I have not seen shatering to be a problem, I'm told in thin wheat there is less shatter loss if you can run fast. To me, no use to not try to get over the acres as fast as you can anyway. |
