Subject: Re: Agco 6000 stripper header

Leesburg, Ohio
Can't remember the model number, but we have had a Massey stripper header that we bought new in '03 from Rudolph Bros. in Booneville, In. Model 6000 sounds right. It was a factory holdover 1998 model, but had not left the factory until '03, and was identical to the model they built in '03. Gave about $17000. An '03 was about $25000 for the same header.

We have had no problems whatsoever, but only put about 300 acres/year through it. The reason we can justify owning a special header for those acres is, it lets us sell long-stemmed straw to the race-track market that we otherwise couldn't reliably sell.

We flipped the teeth over last summer before harvest, after about 1500 acres. There is about two grease fittings, one belt, and one gearbox to check. We did have to replace the feederhouse drive belt a little earlier than normal on the last combine we had it on...it does pull a bit harder on the drive than a regular header, but does not pull hard enough to notice any power difference running the machine. We have had it on a Deere 9400, a 9410, and a 9550. We usually harvest at about 7 mph in 60 to 80 bu. wheat, vs. 2-3 mph with a conventional header. I think AGCO makes adapters for about any brand. A neighbor has a Shelbourne, and think I like the Massey better.

We do see a fair bit of header loss, especially in dry wheat, but when you measure it, (about 1 to 1.5 bu.) it is about the same as the noraml total machine loss with a conventional header...it's just that with a conventional header, all the loss is concentrated in a strip out the back, where with the stripper head, it's spread out over the whole width of the swath, and looks like a fully seeded field of wheat after it rains. you will have virtually no cleaning losses with the stripper head.
