| When the tractor doesn't want to start.....does it smoke out of the exhaust while cranking?
Smoke indicates you are at least getting some fuel into the engine.
When it does finally start - does it run smooth or fart and bark around (like there is air in the fuel)?
Sometimes stuff like this is tough...
From your description it could also be as simple a thing as a dragging starter too. Many times starters slow down gradually over time and a guy doesn't notice until he swaps in a new one. Diesels need good cranking speed especially when warm to fire.
