Dumb question, I guess, but was it hooked directly to the battery, on both terminals?
If it went through any other connections, a minor power fluctuation would fry small components.
My understanding is that hooking directly to the battery is like using a surge protector with power backup with your computer to flatten out power spikes and dips.
