Iowa
When running pairs of spiked closing wheels you need 2 3/8-2 1/2" of clearance between spikes at narrowest point. Make sure that they are run across from each other. If you run them offset in wetter conditions the trench will snake through them not closing the trench effectively. I usually install them in the front set of holes but if you are worried about clearance issues then you can run them in the back holes and they will still work properly. I just like to get the trench closed as quickly as possible. Also make sure that you start out with zero tension on closing wheels and get up to planting speed and then check depth of closing wheels. The "U" between the teeth should just be touching the soil surface. If you see an air gap then try the first position for tension. After setting the closing wheel tension then make sure drag chain brackets are set as low as possible with out dragging trash or soil. Make sure you check seed firmer tension using a fish scale. I like to see around 1 lb. of tension.
