Subject: RE: Cover crops

Eastern VA. No such thing as too many Magnums.
I never did any by air, but by broadcast I guess you mean a spin spreader? I only planted wheat with a spin spreader until this past fall. We spin 2 bushels of wheat whenever a field is finished being harvested. We would then take a field cultivator and scratch it in. It usually is sometime between september and november. We always picked a couple hundred acres of the best looking wheat to put nitrogen and harmony on and carry it to harvest. I averaged about 80 bushels on the broadcasted wheat the past 3 years. Two years ago I bought a drill. I didn't get to use it in '06 cause I was injured for months and my guys didn't know how to set it up. We used it for the first time this past fall and I hope the drill is better than the spinner, but we'll see. The state of Virginia cost shares cover crop, as long as you don't take it to harvest. I know Maryland does the same things and you COULD harvest it. I don't know about other states. Does Ohio not have a cover crop program?
