Brad, I am afraid what you have been doing is your best alternative. 

The problem with most of the suggestions is timeliness.  If Brad is fighting the same kind of ground I suspect we are by the time a guy can get across it to load into a manure spreader is planiting time.  It will burn good in early September if it stays dry.

Oh, and the filter strip idea .... it would take 8 ft high grass that was current and ice resistant.
