Your absolutely right about the bench being heaving enough with 2x4 under it. We did the same thing in our new shop about 5 years ago. We took 1/8 steel and had it sheared and formed to match the framework under it and to make a lip to protect the front edge. It is a great surface, easy to clean, resistant to everything. Only thing I would change if we did it again, would be to look into using stainless steel, but I am sure the cost would drive us right back to steel
