I used hard wood that i sawed on a band saw. 2x12 top , really strong and good to beat on, thirty ft long. I think a steel top would be real good for the sparks from the grinder to land on, but i dont have it and if i took pic s of it now you can nt see the bench for the stuff on it. have a shelf under it the full length and its full too. just can t throw any of that good junk away.
