Subject: RE: Any pipeline welders here?

I am not a pipeline welder, but last year a pipeline was put through very close to me. I talked to the weldors on the job, and the company furnished them with new robotic welders. The weldors didn't like the new machines but I suspect that was because their skills were not being used like when they actually did it with a stick welder. Everyone of them had an old SA200 Lincoln that they swore by. I still say the old SA200 was the finest welder ever built. I have always wanted one, but could never find one either in good enough shape or else too high priced. They do still make them, or very close to them, but they are around $10000. I finally settled for a Miller Trailblazer. Not the equal of the SA200, but close enough to get the job done. Also about 1/3 the cost. I suspect Lincoln has machines very similar to the Trailblazer, and if I had to do it over again I would have liked to at least have tried one.
