They go up and down.
The sample they take is everything it gets, partials, pieces, blanks, they all "count" you can't see them. But don't worry about getting too much soil, they seldom have that problem. It's not unusual to run them up and down 20 times and not have enough soil for a sample bag, much less the 8 to 10 lbs they should have by then.
And if you want a topsoil sample, you get to do that by digging out topsoil from the sample. Major problem with that is you don't get it all, and leaving topsoil in your subsoil can change your nitrogen results big time.
So when you get all done, you have a "soil test", but Daniel the Prophet wouldn't know what the numbers actually mean.
