I've planted a couple hundred acres of EG for others as CRP, but may have an opportunity to play with it on my own for forage. It's a long-term lease on some sandy/variable ground that is only suited for forage. Alfalfa hasn't done well in the past, but the grasses on the piece seem to be productive.
As far as row spacings, I'm sticking to the narrow rows. As you mention, the crowns quickly grow out. In the 16 inch rows, it just takes a couple years to fill in the spaces. Given the choice of bouncing over those big rows of crowns, I'm hoping to crowd the plants enough to lessen the bounce. Besides, there is no such thing as 36" or wider equipment around here.
From what I see of other native grasses, EG looks like the best choice.
And for those others that may suggest other grasses, remember, I'm a native kinda guy! :)
