| I grew up in the Post Rock country at Ness City, Kansas. If you are interested in the history of the rock fence posts, there is a book"Land of The Post Rock" written by Grace Muilenburg and Ada Swineford that tells how they are made and the area of Kansas that used them, due to the fact they had no trees to use for posts. The book was published by the University Press of Kansas. The Library of Congress No. is ISBN 0-7006-0129-5.
There is a museum at LaCrosse, Kansas and used to be a company that made all kinds of things from the post rock for sale, in Ness City on K96 highway about a block east of 283 highway. I am not sure they are still in Business, but might be. One of the biggest quarries of post rock was at Bazine, Kansas 10 miles east of Ness City. My Grandfather made some limestone posts on his land in Southwestern Ness County.
The work to make and install these was a killer. When young, my Father had me set some by myself, just to show me how much work was involved. You used a rock sled so you did not have to lift the 300 to 400 pounds that they weighed. There was an art in setting them in the ground by yourself.
