Depends what you mean by lucky. There are a lot of places in the state that will not gross per acre what is being paid for rent in other states to the east. Yet machinery costs, fertilizer costs, repairs etc. are very close to those high dollar gross areas. Great place to live if you don't like water. Sometimes in the summer you only have to mow the farmyard 2 or 3 times the whole summer,............unless you need it to graze a few calves. Regarding the limestone posts, just spend a day setting some. You will determine they are either "man builders" or "widow makers". I remember in the 60s a couple stopped by visiting neighbors and wanted to take a post home with them. My dad laughed and said he would load a small one in the trunk if they wanted. When he leaned it on the trunk to lift it in, the car almost bottomed out. Needless to say, they decided they didn't want to take it with them. |
