Subject: Purebred and Fullblood

If the US registry was anything like the Canadian one, you had the "full blood" cattle that were imported from Europe, then they were crossed with say a black angus(polled factor) and you got a half blood, then you bought another vial of fullblood semen and bred that back again. When you got to a 7/8 female or a 15/16 male they were registerable as a "purebred". Thus you end up with the odd one that is still black and polled which was desireable as most European imports are horned. Then you select for the blacks and breed them to each other and that black gene is dominant and you build a black herd from there. Been there done that with Maine Anjou. No longer in the cattle business but some of our blood lines are still floating around. Who was to know black calves would be so desirable now.
