Subject: Re: where did the black come from?

Western Nebraska
For the most part there is only one shade of black. When you start looking at red you can tell a lot about a cow that has a red coat. Saler and devon or red devon have a real dark cherry red coat, while gelbvieh and south devon have a lot lighter almost yellow color coat. I think that being able to hide a lot of the genetics under a black coat has allowed the "angus" breed to be all things to all people. Combine the color with the absence of whole herd reporting and it throws the door wide open to put anything and everything in the pot, just so long as the white doesn't show up in front of the sheath.
