Where Lewis and Clark finished the rum
had huges (direcway)for about 5 -6 years then wildblue for 1 or maybe doming up on two years. WB is definitely supierior and cheaper. Uplink speeds with DW are slower than dialup, seriously. Uplink for cheapest WB is still around 100K, which is OK, downlink is 400K - pretty nice. There is some latency with each system, but I use Firefox with tabbed windows, and hop between them - works well.

Now I used Huges 4000 modems, which were a real pain to netowrk. I understand that the 6000 modems are much better, so if you end up with Hughes, make sure you get the 6000's or something newer. But Wildblue uses a very easy to network modem, and I share my bandwidth with a couple very literate teanagers on a wirelss home network without problem.
