Subject: Re: Aluminum stock trailers

Denhoff,ND right in the center of the State
Try and replace a fender on a featherlite, or rather find a dealer that will fix one, my good friend bought a 53' featherlite groundload trailer from dealer in bismarck, ND, floor fell out of it before it was 2 years old. gate latches broke, air suspension would not deflate, lites dont work, and lots of welds starting to crack out. Featherlite replaced the floors with a ribed diamond plate floor, but had to take a week off and pull it to cresco, Iowa to get it replaced. Now he takes it to Johnsen Trailer in Bismarck,ND for service work, they are not too thrilled about serviceing the pos. In all honesty he would not buy another featherlite, trailer is 5 years old now and has holes eaten out buy fifth wheel plate and king pin, gates are just literally hanging there. And when you want to fix something every part has to be cut apart or grind welds ifnot already broken. In my years of trucking experience a trailer has to flex some to be durable and a welded trailer will not do that like a rivited trailer (Wilson or Merrit, Duralite)may be other brands also. And when it comes to fixing a part on a rivited trailer you just bust the colars on a huck rivit, or drill the center out of a buck rivit and it comes right apart, this dont apply to a stock trailer but on a semi trailer the glad hands and electrical plug in are mounted all the way to the left hand side of the trailer and when you turn short on a cold day the coiled air hoses are always breaking and leaking and it is hard on the electrical pins in the electrical cords. Most trailers have these mounted in the center so it pulls the same distance each way you turn. Stock trailer are smaller and dont take the abuse of the larger trailers, and I think the Featherlite makes a nice smaller stock trailer but their are better ones built. Wilson has a heavy 8 or 10,000 # axles and heavy wheels for their trailers which is a big plus. One of you had a good point though about not haveing a place to tie a lariat to when trying to pull animal into trailer punch side trailer, but their durability is very good have hauled alot of rough stock and bison in our punched trailers and have stood up good.
