When the work was done to determine the conversion of ear corn to shelled corn, ears of the varieties of the day (probably before widespread use of double-cross hybrids) were typically 20% cob, 80% grain. Tables haven't been updated for years--though ears of modern hybrids are closer to 10% cob (admittedly, there's a difference from one hybrid to another). Selling ear corn figured at 70 lbs might actually be selling 1.1+ bushels of grain. | |
