The way it was explained to me.... ear corn is by weight, not volume. In your example, you used 70lbs so we'll run with that because it's correct. If you have 70lbs of ear corn, it will yield (shell out) 56lbs of corn, the rest is cob. Both adjusted to 15% moisture.
The volumes are different and most people get confused by that. A bushel of shelled corn, by volume, is 1.25 cubic feet. A bushel of ear corn, by volume, is 2.5 cubic feet. In other words, if you filled a container that measured 1.25 cubic feet with ear corn, you would have less than a bushel, by volume, of ear corn.
Obvious, yeah maybe. Simple, no.
