I don't discount the benefits of spraying aphids, but since there used to be a fence there and a separate field, it is likely that there are other differences in the sprayed vs. unsprayed areas, isn't it? Crop rotation, compaction, soil type, and fertility could certainly be much of the difference on the other side of the fence.
