Jefferson Co. Florida | Well, we consider ourselves "favorable" dryland, but on our sandy soils rainfall timing is still our biggest variable. In single row 38" we planted 45000 plants and had the potential for 100 bu, but most years the water does not come timely and 35bu/ac was our average. So, in twin rows we increased the population because we are covering more crop area and utilize more water in the soil, if a crop does not get it quick the soil will lose it. Our soils will only hold 7-10 days worth of water, so we need an average of one inch per week through the crop to make a bumper crop. Canopy for weed control is another factor in a higher plant population, we have tremendous grass pressure and atrazine and metolachlor just don't do anything for us. Last year we ranged from 40-110 bu/ac depending a weed control, previous crop, and time of planting (we usually plant an early and late sorghum crop. | |
