Subject: Corn drying costs....

How do you figure corn drying costs? And, at what moisture level do you start shelling?

The local elevator charges 1.5% per 1/2 point of moisture. That is rounded to the nearest point. I usually wait until 18% or less, in part because I am a tightwad.

But, here's the math I figured on 18%.

Avg contract price of $3.87/ bu
3% of moisture X 3% dockage = 9%
9% X $3.87 = $0.3483 per bu drying cost.

Assume (plug whatever you want) 150 bpa X $0.3483 = $52.25 per acre lost to drying.

This is why I have never been able to figure out why some people would send 20% or more to the elevator, at least in our area.

Now, if you have your own dryer that's a different story. Those are the costs I am interested in hearing about. My dryer is old, with stir-alls, so I am sure it is not the most efficient. My struggle is figuring the inbound freight to the bin, the propane, the electric, the interest cost, and ultimately the outbound freight.
