I think I've read that the on-going problem w/bees is some kind of bacterial infection they've been getting. Would that be right?

No, I don't think I've ever seen a honeybee in a corn field. We used to have lots of problems w/bumblebees in corn cribs when shelling corn...but that was a different story. I don't think anyone likes bumblebees.
