Subject: RE: Bin busting, literally

Stearns County, Minnesota
Grain is a semi fluid.  A fluid in a container, starting at the floor, will have as much pressure outward as the weight of the fluid has on the floor. This pressure decreases as you go up and there is no outward pressure anymore if the grain is not touching the wall. Grain bins will generally "bust open" near the floor if the  steel or bolts are not up to par. This is the reason for flat storage, for grain, with a concrete bunker for a wall.
