| You take a knife and cut a skin flap. It then grows to be a permanent marker on the animal. Some will cut a flap on jaw, under neck or leg, shoulder. It is a good way to mark cattle, at least were we run in common with other herds. You can see them when a cow is on a run from a distance. If two owners have a similar type of earmark, the waddle will stand out first if you separating cattle out of a bunch. First you look for earmarks, then brand/waddles. Ear tags are too common to look at to try to cut cows out of bunch a horseback.
