N FLA | I threatened to do this last year, but couldnt get all the pieces together. I am in N FL. Goal is to buy low BCS open cows at the seasonal low, and hold them the winter and hopefully sell a heavier cow in the spring/summer at higher market prices. Attached is a graph with the general idea. I started buying, averaged $36 per 100 on 700 lb cows average. I have 16 acres of planted forage, a blend of rye, ryegrass, and turnips, hoping to put 1 per acre, and learn for next year. think we did pretty good on the cow purchase so far. I also have average quality bermudagrass. Do you think any supplement like DDG would be cost effective, assuming, gain will only be worth about 0.50/lb. I think the price I had last year, was 0.16/lb for 50 lb bags of DDG with a limiter. They are on bahiagrass until the rye is ready to graze. I was the only one under 60 at the salebarn, so I guess someone needs to learn this for the next generation.
