Baldwin City, KS | I have baled around 200 so far doing as Markwright described, dumping the windrow from an 8 row header and just picking it up. I run a JD 467 with keystock teeth. At least in the 200 bales anyway, I haven't seen any damage. We have been watching, since everyone said it would trash the pickup. I think the keystock teeth are the key, since they don't get bent and twisted then end up running around under the rest of the pickup destroying things.
We are getting around 1.25 bale per acre this way and the husks are about all that I am comfortable removing from the field as far as fertility loss is concerned. I also think they are alot easier on the belts than if we were flat out baling stalks and all. Plan on putting on plenty of net wrap as well.
Even if it did tear up the pickup, my brother and I pencilled it out some and if you need feed or can sell it for a good price, you can justify the repairs to a degree. | |
