This old saying comes to mind:

"If you can't dazzle them with your brilliance, baffle them with bullsfit" 

Big companies can come up with more esoteric ways to make something rather simple into something complicated so those with limited knowledge of the subject can be seduced into giving up their hard earned money. Not much different than fast talking barn painters only dealing with a lot bigger numbers.
