south central IOWA | Took a picture of the bull I'm going to add to the herd this year. You can't tell from the newest pic but he is a man amongst boys in the lot. We weighed him on 3-7 and he was at 1435lbs at 13 months old. Frame score of 7.9 (oops) He was gaining 3.99lbs/day since the last time we weighed him and being fed well but not heavy. He's probably pushing 1600lbs now.
Sounds good on paper except for the frame but I don't mind that using him on Angus cows. So here's the catch. His BW was 110lbs. Anything over 99lbs gets cut around here. I just couldn't keep my eye's off of him this last summer so I made a deal with Dad and told him since he would get cut, I would use him and pay you for what he weighs and what the slaughter price is at the time. I think I'm going to renege on that deal now cause I thought I would be able to get him a couple hundred dollars cheaper that way but now wouldn't be the case. :-)
His dam is an 11 year old cow that has NEVER had a calf heavier than 90lbs. Plenty of her family in the herd and that cow family is known for low BW calves. His EPD's are good for CE, his BW EPD is better than the herd average, and his growth EPD's are excellent. At least I'm going into this deal knowing and seeing more information than an outsider. I might learn my lesson on this one though to not play with fire. :-)
So am I crazy or what? The first couple of pics are from August and the last today.
