Southwest Iowa | I work at a dairy that also uses sand bedding and flushes manure from the barns. Sand is great for the cows, but tough on equipment. When we made the switch to sand we spent a lot of time researching what other people were doing to seperate their sand. Mechanical seperators were definitely expensive and most people we talked with didn't like them much, always needing maintenance. We instead went with a sand settling lane with a 1/2 percent slope. Very simple design and the sand settles out quickly. We clean the washed sand out of the lane once a day and stack it to dry. After a couple of days the top sand has dried enough that we go ahead and reuse it. During the winter we have to have extra sand to bed with because it freezes. I will try to post some pictures tommorrow. | |
