A good Hereford cow is hard to find because folks just don't sell them. Unless it is a whole herd dispersal sale, a good Hereford cow with a good udder and conformation is very versatile and in many ways better than money in the bank right now. I think most of us have to end up making our own Hereford cows unless we've won the lottery. At least then you know what you've got also. As discussed here you can do a lot of things with her - make black baldies with an Angus bull, go straight Hereford to make some more good cows, sell feeders or sell beef. Even though there is that 5 cent difference in some markets because the hide is not black there are some other advantages money can't buy. With demand for beef increasing I think the black hide differential to several other beef breeds may be shrinking in the future. When feeders are in short supply a good beef breed calf weaned and healthy may be more important than what color the hide. jmho. Jim at Dawn |
