| For our ewes (1/2 east freesian 230% average) that would be big time over feeding. Our second year lambing we followed the vets recommendation and effectively overfeed and had about 14 ewes that got pregnancy toxemia; 3 died. None of the rest have ever had an issue with toxemia again.
Using alfalfa hay I would be concerned with my calcium to phosphorous ratio.
Due to all the snow on the ground this winter (the ewes could almost walk over the hog panels we use as divider fences), we stopped feeding concentrate (usually 1/2 #/head/day). Our ewes are in good condition, they were feed 5#/day of first cut grass hay(too dusty for sale to horse people) for most of the winter and at 6 weeks until their due date we shifted over to 6#/day of second cut grass hay. |
