The Breakfast Club | If it's your first kid, get uni-sex stuff. We had Graco and had good luck with it. I think it was around $120 for the infant carrier and 2 bases from Walmart. I wouldn't spend a ton of money on the high end stuff, they all have to meet the same standards.
Strollers, they sky is the limit. We had a hand me down snap-n-go type where you snap in the infant carrier and I think some are convertable for when the kid is grown enough to sit on its own.
Forgot to mention....we found Babies-R-Us to be a bit of a rip-off compared to our local Target and Walmart.
