I agree with everything mndairyman said but try to get colostrum in the calve within 15 minutes and absolutely no later than 4 hours. I find the calve is more willing to suck within 15 minutes then later. Feed all you can get him to eat the first 12 hour and don't worry if he doesn't want to eat in the next 12 hours.
I've done this for years and have not lost a calve in 14 years.
