| I asked this question at another forum and will do so here too. I just got a new bull catalog in the mail and might consider a new heifer bull this year. IMO, the BW EPDs and actual BW numbers don't always seem to jibe. I realize that half of the EPD of the offspring considers the dam's history also.
Here's a couple bulls, both with BW EPD of 3.1 One has an actual BW of 72 and the other is 89. I would be nervous using the latter bull on heifers. Personally, I like to stay under 2.5 on the EPD and in the 70s on actual BW if possible. I have had good success with actual BW up to 85 on heifers.
I also realize EPDs do not compare across breeds. This is horned Hereford. | |
