We do both. First the heifers get MGA, that starts a little more than a month before you want to AI them. As said above they must be off it for 21 days IIRC. You'll get 60-70% conception out of the AI if everything is done right. Then you can figure your needed bull numbers for the remaining 30-40%, they'll have 2 or 3 more chances to breed the heifers depending on how long you want your calving to be.

We also have given the late calvers a shot of PG right before we went in with bulls to try and get them to cycle sooner and thus breed and not be washed out, seemed to work pretty good this year. The cows that got the shot bred back much better than a group that didn't both being late calvers.

We can't worry about a storm that we have no idea about 9 months after breeding all you can do is calve when your facilities will allow.
