I think that I would have a water test done ... If you are getting a lot of bacteria in the water that can cause that "off smell" ...I think it's important to know what's there.
If you have E-coli in the water or any of the other "bad bugs" you should take care of that situation. Especially with a shallow well near the cattle yard.
