Sounds like you already have to many additives, if you think you are getting manure put up a butt rail about a foot away from the edge of the tank. they can lower their head to drink but i've yet to see one sit down on the edge to poop. As for the backwashing I 've never figured out how to stop that other than a long walk from feed. Here in the feedlot, cleaning it is basically something to do on a weekly basis' and some waters are terrible {energy free mirafount} and some are a breeze { concrete bohlmans} and the rest fall in between. So basically all one can do is clean the tank often and figure how to make it fast , easy and thorough. But no come to think of it I had an older cattleman tell me a long time ago how they would keep enough fish in the tank to keep them clean . Also said once the fish population got a little high they would practically take the lips off an animal to get at any grain particles . That will probally stir some more responses.
