If you have a surplus of hay then it wouldn't pay to put up silage with today's high corn price. But if hay is short then silage will cut your hay use in half. The thing I like about silage is that with just two guys (my neighbor chopping and me bagging), I can put up a bag of silage in one day and I've got half my feed needs covered for most of the year. The cows seem to be more calm when silage is available. It also gives the more timid cows/calves a chance to go eat hay when the rest of them go for the silage feeder. Its not the cheapest way to feed cows, but its an option that's available to anyone that also raises corn.
