I'm a silage fan but you have to figure opportunity cost of the ground and equipment. Custom silage hiring gets expensive. Silage gives you some moisture and grain in the feed, goes good with ground hay gives alot of palatibility. We use bags, most around here use bunkers.

We don't feed much silage to cows mostly prairie hay in March and April.
Use silage for backgrounding calves.
We'll feed silage for the foreseeable future.
