That was the joke, they would be tired of the horse showing up in their yard, they'd put up the gate - to keep it on your side. ;)
Boarding a horse takes $120 a month and up; after they got it they realized that, & found a step-dad to take care of their kid for free. No incentive to put up a gate in that situation. :)
